    Posted: 06 February 2010 at 20:54
My trusty A-100 has developed a problem.
I have been using it with a Tamron 70-200 xr di 2.8 lens with no problems.
Today I was at the Great Falls in Paterson,NJ and it took on shot ok, than I got "camera error code 0x5b and it locked up. I turned it off and removed the battery, tried it again and the same thing one shot than the code after the second shot. I removed the battery again and tried a different lens, Tamron 18-50 xr di2 and the same thing. at this point I took out the battery, removed the lens and put it away. I finished what I was doing with an A-350 with no problems using the Tamron lens'. Here is where I am confused.
When I got home I put a 35-70 F4 Maxxum lens on the A-100 and it worked flawlessly!! 35 shots with no problems, so I put the Tamron lens back on, two shots and the error code again. This camera has had Tamron lens' on it since it was new, 28-300 xr di, 90mm 2.8 macro, 17-50 xr di & 70-200 xr di. It just don't make sense that all of a sudden it would stop accepting Tamron lens' after 4 years of use.
If anyone has an idea, please let me know. I could not find this code in the owners manual.

TOM

OK, I tried an experiment. I set the camera to aperature priority and the Tamron 17-50 worked perfect @ F2.8, as soon as I tried to stop it down one stop it gave me the code. I had the same result with the Maxxum 35-70. I guess this means that there is a problem with the aperature circuit or motor. Looks like it is going to be making a trip to Precision camera, I sure am glad that the Best Buy warranty is still in affect.

Update on my A-100
Well, I took my A-100 to Best Buy to have it repaired under the extended warranty, but since it was the third repair they "junked it out" and would not do another repair.( I'm a little sad about this, I really liked this camera). So they allowed me store credit for what a new replacement camera was worth (A230). I used that toward the purchase of an A330 and another 4 year ext war. I'm not sure that I like the way the 330 feels, it seems small in my hand. I guess I will get use to it, the plus is the live view, I use this feature quite often on my A350. I will post a review after I use it for a while. I do highly suggest if you buy a camera from Best Buy to go for thier extended warranty, how can you go wrong with replacement after 4 years of use.

Were the previous repairs for related problems or some entirely different kinds of failure?

The only time in my life that I have bought extended warranty was for my A700 that I got from Best Buy. I wonder which camera they will consider as the a700 replacement if it were to fail right now....
