Been a while since I posted a series since I lacked a bit of inspiration lately. Untill I encountered this beauty at the Historical Formula 1 races on the famous track of Zandvoort, Holland.

This is a replica of the Ferrari 156 Sharknose as raced by Oliver Gendebien in the 1961 Belgium F1 race at Spa Francorchamps. The car was also driven by Wofgang von Trips later that year. The semi-replica is build around the original engine and drivetrain. A detailed report on this restoration can be found on 'restoration of the 156 Sharknose' and a beautifull short film at 'film about the 156'.

All static shots are made with a 17-35G and the panning shots with the 80-200APO, both coupled to a A700. Comments are ofcourse always welcome.

1) The nose of the shark

2) The Sharknose at this best

3) From the back

4) Detail

5) Through the nose

6) Full speed over the 'Hunserug'

7) With his famous predecessor, an orginal Maserati 250F

8) Still going strong

I was wondering about the yellow also. Nice photos and thanks for sharing them. The Maserati's very cool as well.
As for evoking memories, are you that old Brettania? For me they evoke memories of the great old movie Grand Prix but I think I saw that a few years after it came out. Incidentally, Ron Howard is working on an updated version of that, set in the '70's or '80's which I'm looking forward to.

The house color of Ferrari is yellow. But due to old racing-rules (UK was green "british racing green", Italy was red, Germany white (until some removed the color from Mercedes because of the weight [-> Silberpfeil]) and so on...) Ferrari became red to the public ("the red car was winning") and Enzo Ferrari decided to introduce new designed cars in red to the public.

@dschroed and brettania; I did not know the original house color of Ferrari was yellow. By 1961 when this car raced most Ferrari's were indeed red. However for the Belgian Grand Prix this car was run by a Belgian team and therefore painted in the Belgium race color which was yellow. By the time Von Trips drove it, it was red again.

I would have seen the movie for sure (on first release in 1966) and I think Ferrari raced at the NZ Grand Prix circa 1954-1957 where IIRC I saw Raymond Mays or Reg Parnell driving the BRM v16. Again AFAIR Stirling Moss was in the same race.

OK, you've got a few years on me then. That BRM V16 must have been a real beast, and it was a brave man's sport in those days. I checked on the NZ GP and was interested to see that the first one ('54) was won by Stan Jones (1980 F1 champion Alan's father). He was driving an Australian built car called a Maybach, powered by a 6 cylinder engine from a captured WWII German scout car. It was certainly a very different sport back then...
