Your Street Photographs please!

I used to do a lot of candid 'people' photographs when I was in my teens - I've done much less in recent years, perhaps because I'm a little more self-concious of pointing a camera at strangers - but I think I might try to get back into it! These are some of my old efforts (circa 1980), which were part of my submission for my O Level under the title 'The City Awakes'...

Porter at the old Billingsgate market

A tramp asleep on the embankment - taken with a Pentacon 29/2.8 if I remember rightly, I was so close and the shutter was so loud he woke with a start..

Bob, really good pictures - love that last one and the porter. You should definitely go back to it.

I actually get off two stops from Catford Bridge - spooky!

Am I allowed to post?

Love these. You can really tell that these were from back then - very nicely taken.

Bob, these shots are fantastic! The last two especially you can definitely tell they were taken in the 80's which makes them even more special! Also the range of the people you've covered -- from tramps to working men to yuppies!

Without meaning to digress, I was wondering, would it be possible to have a street photography TP, please? I do feel very self-conscious about taking photos of strangers, but I'd really like to take photos like the above. I spent my student years in a very touristy town, so I'm used to ignore other photographers without second thoughts -- but at the same time I would never dream of pointing my camera to the crowd for fear of getting told off or mugged. Or simply the uncomfortable feeling of intruding into someone's privacy. How do you do it? Have you ever been confronted? And if so, what did you say?

@Rubberdials - Yes, post! I only put my stuff up to get people going: the more people doing street photography around SE London, the less self-conscious I'll be about doing it myself! :-)

Sounds like a very good idea - why not start something up in the Open forum yourself? – Once it gets going we can convert it into a TP…

I was only once accosted myself; it was when I went back to Billingsgate about 6 months later to take a similar series in colour – I was collared by one of the guards there and made to sign a paper saying I would not use any pictures of their people for commercial gain.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Thanks all for your appreciation – I must confess, two of the pics I had originally planned to post were so spotty with dust and scratches that I had to go back to these ones (which I had stored more carefully) – I managed to get one in a reasonable state, but the other is quite awful – a shame, because I liked the subject..

I really like your tramp bob, did he notice that you had taken his pic i always feel more self conscious taking pics of the homeless/beggars. I should have some more to post soon as i've just shot 6 rolls of film in dublin at the weekend on the 700si and 35-70/4 which is such a nice lens to use.

I'm often slightly off-kilter going across those platform bridges at night. :-)

I seem to remember he woke with a bit of a start - I think I took to my heels (not being very brave even then:-)

Bob your shots are great, love the HAIR!

You have in a collection of a few images inspired me to shoot candid/street once more ... I haven't done it really since 1999 ... my travel shooting focuses on buildings and crops and abstracts and colors ... but you have shown me what I would like to be able to look back on in 20 years time as a "look at those wild clothes/hair" images.

THANK YOU for posting them. Man, dig that hair and those clothes!!!
I can still remember how that music used to make me smile

These also would fit the overlooked shots theme nicely:) first two are over processed to make them interesting. they were shot by a remote controller in my pocket, camera was hanging on my neck, with prefocus:p

And this one.. i didnt get around to post it for long time.
